Central Vacuum Systems vs. Portable Vacuum Cleaners
As the difference in price between central vacuum systems and portable vacuums has lessened, central vacuum systems have become a more practical and cost-effective solution to cleaning your home. There are several benefits to central vacuum systems:
Healthier Air - The biggest benefit of a central system is that it enables personnel to take collected dirt outside of the cleanroom, where they can dispose of it without any threat to the people in the room.
Since the central vacuum system is located in an isolated area, it can have bigger, heavier motors. Central vacuums have three to five times more power than traditional vacuums. Because the power unit is not meant to be portable, it can contain a more powerful motor than traditional vacuums.
The most obvious benefit of having a central vacuum system is that you do not have to lug a portable vacuum cleaner up and down stairs. Few people replace vacuum bags with enough regularity, and even if you do, most portables do not have proper seals. Either of these problems create leakage, which simply causes you to pick dust off of the floor and put it into the air.
Noise - Generally, central vacuum systems are quieter than traditional vacuums. Remember that the power unit is located elsewhere (garage, basement, etc.), so the noise will probably be insulated.
Dust, Dirt, and Health
A central vacuum system is permanent. A power unit's tubing is behind the wall and well sealed. The "power brushes" easily move from unit to unit and are well sealed (with only one connection rather than multiple joints). And if you choose to also install automatic dustpans—the small slits in the baseboard for you to sweep dirt, you will never have direct contact with dirt and dust during cleaning again. This not only adds to the convenience and ick-free value of a central vacuum system, but it is safer, healthier, and cleaner.
Cost - Central vacuum systems save you money by prolonging the life of your carpeting, drapes and furniture through deeper cleaning.
